Before you call
- Confirm who is authorized to arrange the funeral and whether a pre-arrangement exists
- Choose your starting path: direct cremation, cremation with service, or burial
- Check Ontario Works or other assistance before signing if finances are tight
What to request
- Full General Price List (GPL) — providers must give you one
- Itemized quote for the exact arrangement you want
- Separation of funeral home fees, merchandise, third-party costs, and taxes
- What is not included in the quote
What to compare
- Non-declinable service charge (the minimum required fee)
- Transportation, mileage limits, and after-hours charges
- Third-party fees: cremation, death registration, BAO fee, cemetery, coroner
- Optional extras: urn, casket, webcast, reception, pallbearers
Before signing
- Confirm the provider is BAO licensed
- Review any cemetery or crematorium bylaws if applicable
- Ensure every agreed service and fee is itemized in the contract
- Confirm whether the total is for simple cremation, cremation with service, or burial
